ETFs 101 – What is an ETF?

Image
With the recent underperformance of most active mutual funds in 2018, there has been an increasing focus on passive investing & especially indexing. Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have suddenly become very popular, receiving a lot of media attention and interest from investors – yet most of us don’t really know what exactly are ETFs & how they function. As a result, many facts have mingled with rumours (e.g. ETFs aren’t liquid), making it challenging for even informed investors to really understand & invest in them. But while ETFs are a new concept in Indian markets,  they’ve actually been around for a long time  (since 1990s) and have even become the preferred investment choice of most retail investors across the world. A Brief History of  Exchange Traded Funds The modern day open-ended mutual fund structure is a financial innovation from the early 1920s – rather than buying single stocks, investors now had the option to invest in a diversified p...

Inflation – A handy guide

Image
The basics of Inflation Inflation is the rate of increase or decrease in prices over a specific period of time. It indicates how much more expensive or cheaper a particular set of goods and services has become over a certain period, like a quarter or a year. In India, inflation is calculated on wholesale goods as well as the consumer basket of goods. Inflation is calculated on the former by tracking changes in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI). This index measures the change in price of goods that are traded in bulk, usually between businesses. For example, change in price of coal, electricity, manufacturing of textiles, motor vehicles etc are all considered while calculating the  WPI . Consumer Price Inflation For the common man, it is the  Consumer Price Index (CPI)  which is the more relevant tracker of inflation. The  CPI  measures the  change in price of goods and services that is commonly consumed by households . The CPI basket of goods and...

What is Nifty BeES?

Nifty BeES, a combination of a share and a mutual fund unit, trades on the capital market segment of NSE. Nifty BeES (Benchmark Exchange Traded Scheme)—the first exchange traded fund (ETF) in India—seeks to provide investment returns that closely correspond to the total returns of securities as represented by the S&P CNX Nifty Index. Nifty BeES, a combination of a share and a mutual fund unit, trades on the capital market segment of NSE (National Stock Exchange). Each Nifty BeES unit is 1/10th of the S&P CNX Nifty Index value. Nifty BeES units are traded and settled in dematerialised form like any other share in the rolling settlement. Thus, it allows you to trade real-time on NSE and gives you real-time indicative NAV (net asset value).  Nifty BeES offers the benefits of diversification, index tracking and low expenses. Nifty BeES can be bought / sold like a share through any NSE terminal at prices available on the screen. The underlying portfolio of Nifty BeES ...

Put Call Ratio

Put/Call ratio (PCR)  :  is a popular derivative indicator, specifically designed to help traders gauge the overall sentiment (mood) of the market. The ratio is calculated either on the basis of options trading volumes or on the basis of the open interest for a particular period. If the ratio is more than 1, it means that more puts have been traded during the day and if it is less than 1, it means more calls have been traded. The PCR can be calculated for the options segment as a whole, which includes individual stocks as well as indices. How to Analyse Put Call Ratio ? PCR as a Contrarian Indicator Put / Call Ratio Interpretation If put-call ratio is increasing during correction in up-trending market and Implied volatility is falling Bullish Indication.
